My Favorite Day of the Year
When people ask what’s your favorite day of the year is, of course the usual replies are birthdays, Christmas (although even though it’s not my holiday I prefer Thanksgiving). Of course, as an Irishman and the owner of an Irish Bar, St Patrick’s Day gets an honorary mention as a high holiday.
All that having been said, however, I have to say that over the past 14 years, the one day I have come to look forward to the most is Opening Day. Especially here at Foleys, where it is a special day.
While we are the home of the New York Cardinals Fans we are first and foremost a Baseball Bar. While we can’t guarantee the volume will be on your favorite team, we will guarantee the game will be on somewhere in the bar. The only thing we ask is that you abide by the Foleys #1 commandment: Root for your team and not against the other team. So come and feel free to root for Yoenis, Aaron or Petey, but we don’t want to hear your views on the other teams' mothers or sexuality.
So why is Opening Day so special to me at Foley's? Well, we will have fans rooting for as many as 10 different teams. It’s a clean slate, so all those fans have dreams and expectations for the coming season. While they may not live and die on every pitch, their team will become part of their daily life for the next six months. That team, good or bad, will be there to help some people through some rough times or distract others at a time when they need distracting.
So as the season opens, I want welcome all baseball fans to stop by. If you don’t see your game on don’t be afraid to ask for it, because after all we are “an Irish Bar with a Baseball Attitude." Feel free to take a look around, check out the memorabilia and who knows who you might see because “you never know who you might meet at Foleys”.
