July in the Baseball Calender to most means the All Star Game,Home Run Derby and all that goes with it, For me it is tinged with a hint of sadness cause it also marks the Anniversary of the passing of my good friend Red Foley and this week two of the biggest names in not just Yankee lore but in Baseball Lore will be going to join Red in that big Stadium in the sky,Bob Sheppard and George Steinbrenner, two men who couldnt be more different but who were good men and who both had a great love not just for the pinstripes but also for the city of New York and the game of baseball,Sheppard was an icon, countless players have told me what a honor it was just to get introduced at Yankee Stadium and sadly i never had the chance to meet him but he did sign a baseball for me.
As for Mr Steinbrenner he was The Boss, love him or hate him he was the guy that you wanted to own your team and he was good for baseball and for the Yankees and the cities of New York and Tampa as well as the IOC,NCAA.
I did have the pleasure of meeting Mr Steinbrenner once with a 5yr old Ryan at a Rays game in Tampa,he was waiting for an elevator and dressed in out Yankee jerseys we approached and i congratulated him on the success of the Yankees and introduced him to Ryan and told him how Ryan lived in Ireland but loved the Yankees,as we were walking away Ryan asked me "who was that guy",i told him "thats  George Steinbrenner and he owns the Yankees"to which Ryan replied "but dad i thought Joe Torre owned the Yankees"i turned around to see Mr Steinbrenner chuckle.
As they would say in Ireland "May the road rise to meet you,may the wind be always on your back and may you be in Heaven an hour before the devil knows you're dead"
Mr Sheppard,Mr Steinbrenner you will both be missed

While i have been impressed by the debut of the new Nationals Pitcher and i'm delighted for all my buddies associated with the Nats, can we please stop with the coronation, have we forgotten about David Clyde or more recently the much ballyhooed Cubs pitchers Mark Prior and Kerry Wood and closer to home Generation K, LET THE YOUNG CHAP TAKE HIS LICKS,but consider he has feasted on the Pirates,Orioles,Indians and Kansas City, not exactly the 27 Yankees, and dont send him to Anaheim,if he lives up his potential he will get to plenty of All Star Nods, why shoulod he go and not a journeyman like RA Dickey who is having an unbelieveable start.in closing before we start talking about awards and accolades please take a look at one Mr Ubaldo Jimenez

i would start by apologizing for not being more diligent in updating my blog and feel free to get on my case if i slack off,so much has happened since my last ponderings but i felt in light of what has happened in the last few days that i should add my 2 cents worth.
Being the owner of a Baseball Bar that is known to be a home for some MLB Umps when they come through NYC i have been asked over and over what i thought of what happened the other night in Detroit, let me start by saying that i am proud to consider Jim Joyce a friend and as President of the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame i had the honor of inducting Jim  last year and if i may say so the way that Jim has handled himself is one of the reasons Jim was inducted, among many of my friends who either play or have played Major League Baseball they always speak very highly of Jim Joyce.
I made a few mistakes today but you know they wont be on the cover of every newspaper across the country tomorrow.
There have been alot of Umpires in the news recently for their actions but it would be an absolute shame if Jim gets lumped in with them.
Jim Joyce you are an excellant Umpire,a true Son of Erin and a great human being and i`m proud to call you my friend.
